#MonthlyPicks | September ’15 Picks by Harris Schoenfeld
The Mets are in first place, and the best baseball in the world is in Citi Field right now. Ditto for the food. The Amazins and Aramark are proud to offer a variety of delicious options to satisfy any fan’s palate. Try Mama’s of Corona, serving authentic Italian heroes, salads and desserts, and Daruma of Tokyo with delectable sushi rolls and Japanese cuisine. Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group brings two NYC favorites — Shake Shack and Blue Smoke On The Road — to the Taste of the City area in centerfield on the Field Level. Blue Smoke offers mouthwatering, real-pit barbecue featuring pulled pork sandwiches and brisket. Shake Shack grills up game day favorites, such as the Shack Burger. USHG also presents El Verano Taqueria with authentic tacos and nachos as well as Box Frites, fresh-cut Belgian-style fries with dipping sauces. Rounding out Taste of the City is a Long Island-themed seafood stand, Catch of the Day, inspired by award-winning chef Dave Pastrernack. The fried flounder sandwich and lobster roll are among the tremendous menu items. And don’t miss out on Two Boots pizza, Pig Guy NYC’s Bacon on a Stick, Pat LaFrieda’s Original Filet Mignon Steak Sandwich and signature dishes from Rao’s. Other options are Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs and Crinkle Cut French Fries, Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors hand-crafted burgers, Premio sausage, Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, Mister Softee ice cream and more! Ballpark favorites, such as peanuts, pretzels, popcorn and Cracker Jack, are part of the line-up as well, and satisfy your thirst with Pepsi and Budweiser products.
The Mets Hall of Fame and Museum at Citi Field displays six decades of Amazin’ history. Located adjacent to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, the museum is a virtual walk down memory lane with a treasure trove of artifacts and images. Its interactive touch-screen exhibits showcase video and audio highlights of the franchise’s signature moments.
Citi Field’s VIP entrances are named after individuals who made an indelible mark on the club and whose numbers have been retired. First Base VIP honors Gil Hodges, the manager who led the Mets to their first World Championship in 1969. Third Base VIP recognizes Tom Seaver, the Hall of Fame pitcher and team leader in wins, earned run average and strikeouts. Left Field VIP is named after Casey Stengel, the first manager in the Flushing Nine’s history.
Photographic imagery of famous players and historic moments are displayed inside Citi Field along the concourses and outside the ballpark with banners on Mets Plaza and in the parking lots. More than 27,000 bricks outside the Rotunda on the Citi Field Fanwalk pay tribute to the team, their fans and the Amazin’ Moments in team history. The original Shea Home Run Apple from 1981 is one of the most popular attractions at Citi Field, and its position on Mets Plaza serves as a meeting spot for many fans.
