Wide screens make wide-eyed audiences!
The Museum of the Moving Image will present another See It Big! series from Thursday, Aug. 1, to Sunday, Sept. 8.
Seven different films will screen a total of 31 times. All are in 70mm format, which offers astonishing vivid images and richer sound.
The movies are 2001: A Space Odyssey (six times), Dunkirk (five times), Hamlet (three times), Brainstorm (three times), It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (four times), Roma (six times), and Ready Player One (four times). All screenings take place in the Sumner M. Redstone Theater.

2001: A Space Odyssey: Aug. 1, 7 pm; Aug. 2, 7 pm; Aug. 3, 3:30 pm; Aug. 4, 3:30 pm; Aug. 10, 6:30 pm; and Aug. 11, 6:30 pm.
Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi masterpiece stars HAL (“Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer), a spaceship’s computer system that battles Russian and American astronauts on a journey through space and time. It’s 149 minutes with an intermission.
Roma: Aug. 3, 7 pm; Aug. 4, 7 pm; Aug. 8, 7 pm; Aug. 9, 7 pm; Aug. 10, 3:30 pm; and Aug. 11, 3:30 pm.
Alfonso Cuarón, who won three Academy Awards for other films, directed this semi-autobiographical 2018 film about a maid in Mexico City in the 1970s. It’s in Spanish with English subtitles.
Dunkirk: Aug. 15, 7 pm; Aug. 16, 7 pm; Aug. 17, 4 pm; Aug. 24, 2 pm; and Sept. 1, 2 pm.
This 2017 recounting of the Battle of Dunkirk won three Academy Awards. It takes viewers to the shores of France during World War II.
Hamlet: Aug. 18, 4:30 pm; Aug. 24, 4:30 pm; and Aug. 25, 2 pm.
This 1996 version of a Shakespeare classic features an all star cast including Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, and Kate Winslet. It’s 238 minutes with an intermission.
Brainstorm: Aug. 22, 7 pm; Aug. 25, 7 pm; and Sept. 6, 7 pm.
Director Douglas Trumbull’s sci-fi thriller is about a device that can record thoughts and dreams. Stunning visual effects portray telepathic experiences, cutting between widescreen and standard size.
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World: Aug. 31, 2 pm; Sept. 1, 5 pm; Sept. 7, 2 pm; and Sept. 8, 5 pm.
With such Hollywood legends as Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, and Ethel Merman, this epic 1963 comedy revolves around a hunt for buried treasure. It’ll be shown with a 20-minute intermission that’ll include police-call audio.
Ready Player One: Aug. 30, 7 pm; Aug. 31, 6:30 pm; Sept. 7, 6:30 pm; and Sept. 8, 2 pm.
Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi film transports viewers to the year 2045, where the real world is a harsh place. The escape is OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where people can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone—the only limits are a person’s imagination.
See It Big! is a periodic program that shows popular films on a large screen with surround sound. Each program has a theme, such as action, horror or musicals.
