It’s in Queens
#PickoftheWeek | Sunnyside Restaurant Week Serves An Opening Pop-Up Market on Oct. 18
The magic is back…not to mention the delicious food, Made In Queens merchandise, inspiring entertainment, and low prices!
The eighth annual Sunnyside Restaurant Week kicks off with a Japanese Autumn Pop-Up Market in Bliss Plaza (under the 7 train at 46th Street and Queens Boulevard) on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 6 pm.
A celebration of the Land of the Rising Sun, the afternoon will feature Japanese cuisine, craft vendors, and live entertainment spearheaded by the colorful COBU, an all-female troupe that mixes traditional Japanese Taiko drumming with rhythmic tap dancing. Plus, free planned children’s activities include airbrush tattoos, hand-painting, and a variety show.
Tables will display Restaurant Week 2020 menus, and shoppers will be able to enter special contests at the Sunnyside Shines table. Of course, safety ambassadors will strictly enforce COVID-prevention practices, such as free distribution of face masks and hand sanitizer, no-contact market browsing, and social distancing.
“We’re excited to present a responsibly managed pop-up this year,” stated Sunnyside Shines Executive Director Jaime-Faye Bean. “In last past years, this program has been a valuable platform for creative and entrepreneurial makers and artisans to expand visibility and scale up, while also increasing foot traffic to local businesses. The market will also be a celebration of resilience and community spirit and a strong show of support for the neighborhood’s small business character.”
Sounds wonderful, but what about Restaurant Week 2020? To run from Oct. 21 through Oct. 28, a minimum of 46 local eateries — serving cuisines from Colombia, Ecuador, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Thailand, Tibet, Turkey, and the U.S. — will participate. Each one will offer a three-course dinner for $25 with some establishments also offering lunch specials or other $25 deals.
Sunnyside Shines will run contests via social media (@sunnysideshines) during the promotion. The big one is for a $250 certificate to a participating restaurant of choice. The agency’s website has menus and information on COVID-related restrictions as per on-site dining, delivery, and takeout.
