It’s in Queens
#PickoftheWeek | Learn about a fascinating place during ‘Celebrate Historic Jackson Heights’ weekend
Great restaurants. Beautiful architecture. Gay life. Latin flair. Sari shopping. This neighborhood deserves some love.
It’ll get plenty of affection during Celebrate Historic Jackson Heights this weekend.
Organized by the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, this two-day extravaganza features walking tours, a lecture, memorabilia, and top-notch local networking.
The Community United Methodist Church will get the party started with an Old Days exhibition on June 8 from 10 am to 2 pm. Items on view will include vintage photographs, maps, marketing brochures, and newspaper clippings.
The religious institution, whose entrance is at 81-10 35th Ave., is actually the center of operations. Daniel Karatzas, who wrote “Jackson Heights: A Garden in the City,” will offer a free slide lecture on the neighborhood there at 10:45 am and again at 12:15 pm. A native son who works locally at Beaudoin Realty, he’ll focus on history.
The first day’s other activity is self-guided tours that will be offered from noon to 4 pm. The private apartment buildings will be open to the public, and strollers can explore as many as 15 community gardens with help from maps that will be provided for $10. (The rain date is June 15.)
Karatzas, who owns a co-op there, will return with another tour guide on Sunday, June 9. After meeting near the church at 82nd Street and 35th Avenue, they’ll lead participants to some hot spots while focusing mainly on local history. Karatzas told this website that Jackson Heights is the first planned garden and cooperative community in the United States. Parts of it have federal, state, and city landmark designations.
Tickets cost $10, but they must be purchased in advance. Buy them at Beaudoin Realty, 78-27 37th Ave., Ste. 5 (second floor) between 11 am and 5 pm or at Espresso 77, 35-57 77th St.
