#Newsflash | Woodhaven Candy Shop Makes History

BY QEDC It's In Queens

Sometimes good things happen to good people…and their three-generation, almost-100-year-old Woodhaven sweet shop.

Schmidt’s Candy was added to the NYS Historic Business Preservation Registry this week.

Founded in 1925 by Frank Schmidt, the confectionary has been making and selling Old World German chocolate and other yummies at 94-15 Jamaica Ave. ever since. Frank’s granddaughter, Margie, still uses the same recipes and a traditional copper kettle when crafting her products, which include everything from Finnish Licorice to Marzipan to Marshmallow Jelly Bars.

Queens Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, a member of the NYS Committee on Small Business, nominated Schmidt’s Candy for the registry, which is open for businesses that are at least 50 years old. Coordinated through the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the honorary program provides educational and promotional assistance to listees.
