#NewsFlash | Outdoor Book Swap Hosts Family-Friendly Theater on Oct. 23
BY QEDC It's In Queens
It began with a guy giving away books on a street corner and quickly grew into an outdoor library and chess hub. Soon thereafter, musicians started jamming there on Saturdays, and now, it’s about to host a theatrical production.
The Sunnyside Book and Media Swap will host two free outdoor performances of The Selfish Giant on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 10 am and noon.
PinProductions, a Sunnyside-based video-and-theater company that specializing in puppetry and animation, performs this adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic tale about a giant who builds a wall around his garden to keep out the town’s children. Mission accomplished, but then his garden plunges into an endless winter.
Sounds awesome, but it doesn’t really make sense. What is the Sunnyside Book and Media Swap?
Located on the corner of 43rd Street and Skillman Avenue, the public exchange (fka Sunnyside Free People’s Library) is the brainchild of Volker Detering, a German immigrant who simply wanted to create a place where people can take and/or donate books, board games, DVDs, CDs, vinyl, and other items. Featuring tables, boxes, and a tarp, it’s open seven days a week, but it’s extra busy on Saturday mornings when a farmers market operates nearby.
