The East River is calling!
The LIC Community Boathouse and Socrates Sculpture Center have joined forces to offer free kayaking and canoeing from Hallets Cove in Long Island City.
The season started on May 13, and public excursion times are noon to 5 pm on Saturdays through Sept. 16, weather permitting. No RSVP or experience is necessary, and equipment is provided. (While we’re listing the details: Yes, you sign a waiver; Yes, you wear a lifejacket; Yes, guides are available; Yes, minors can participate with a guardian; and Yes, trips are planned around tides and ferry boat schedules.)
Founded in the early 2000s, LIC Community Boathouse is a volunteer-run agency with an entrance at Vernon Boulevard and 31st Avenue. In addition to paddling, members work with local youths, participate in clean-up efforts, and advocate for clean water and other environmental issues. The nonprofit has partnered with nearby Socrates to increase awareness and offer storage.
