#NewsFlash | ¡Azúcar! The History of Salsa
BY Michael Gillen
This is the fun way to study history.
Cali Salsa Pal’ Mundo presents La Historia de la Salsa at Sunnyside’s Thalía Spanish Theatre from November 4 until December 11. The audience can expect a high-energy mix of mesmerizing dance moves, intoxicating percussion, and infectious rhythm. (Grooving in the seats is definitely allowed.)
The Jackson Heights-based Cali Salsa Pal’ Mundo, which is now in its fifth year, traces the genre’s roots from its African-Cuban origins to its current high tech, world-renown form, emphasizing its Caribbean, Nuyorican, South American, and Central American influences. With 24 members, the troupe cranks out roughly 25 dazzling numbers, changing their colorful costumes throughout the show.
General tickets are $40 each, and shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 4 pm. The Greenpoint Avenue performance space premiered this show last February, and now it’s back by popular demand.
