It’s in Queens
#KidsCorner | Virtual Science Camp for Queens Youngsters
The details about summer camps in NYC are very confusing these days. When do they begin? Are there health guidelines? What about scholarships? Can kids go to pools and museums? Are sleep-away camps open?
Luckily, Alley Pond Environmental Center is offering the delightfully straightforward Virtual Summer Science in the Natural World. This interactive series will use Zoom to connect children to mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates via guests, literacy, movement, and activities. The cost is $65 per household with a limit of 15 households at a time and three different age groups.
The first session for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, “Animals, Animals, Animals,” will run from Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am daily. True to its name, it will basically be an introduction to animals with live guests.
Next up in the same age range is “Animal Habitats,” which will stream from Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am each day. Youngsters will explore animal homes and learn about the Natural World by looking at the unique characteristics of such habitats as forests, ponds, rainforests, deserts, and mountains.
For first-through-third-graders, “Curious Creatures” will operate from July 6 to July 10 from 11 am to noon. An APEC Educator will lead science experiments, animal encounters, and a daily nature connection challenge. Each lesson will focus on a different living thing and its unique characteristics and adaptations.
The second session, “Exploring Ecosystems,” will be live from July 13 to July 17 from 11 am to noon. Again, APEC Educators will zoom campers into ecosystems and study animals that call them “home” via simple science experiments, animal encounters, and a daily nature connection challenge.
The program for fourth-to-seventh-graders will begin with “Animal Encounters” from July 6 to July 10, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. With guidance from APEC Animal Ambassadors, youngsters will learn about organisms such as mammals, birds, and invertebrates and participate in animal-centered activities and experiments.
The second session, “Immersive Ecosystems,” will stream from July 13 to July 17, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. Campers will learn about ecosystems such as forests, deserts, and mountains. Each topic will include a lesson on the “Ecosystem of the Day,” along with animal demonstrations, experiments, and activities with APEC Animal Ambassadors.
Located at 224-65 76th Ave. in Oakland Gardens, APEC is surrounded by nature trails and landscapes. It’s closed currently temporarily, due to COVID.
