#InTheLoop | Queens Underground Film Festival Includes Costume Party
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Q: Is this borough big enough for two Queens Underground brands?
A: Yes, especially if a costume party is involved.
This might not make sense at first glance, but wait a few seconds.
The nonprofit Queens Underground will present the Black & Brown Film Festival at Jamaica Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 7 pm to midnight. The program features a vampire web series produced by local filmmaker Ray Loot, the poetry video “Moments” by local wordsmith SavB1, and the animated horror short “Malakout” by Farnoosh Abedi.
As October is Hispanic Heritage Month, other pieces include the poetry video “Latino with Soul” by Mutha Wildflower and “Dreamer,” a short by Vergi Rodrigues that depicts a DACA recipient who has problems with TSA Agents when re-entering the United States after a trip south of the border.
Because Black & Brown will take place in late October, the organizers are going to host the event as a massive costume party with DJ Sawse Tones and a red carpet where attendees can rock their swag and chat with local talk show producers. Attendees will also select the winners in the Best Male and Best Female costume categories.
Admission runs from $25 to $75, and local vendors will peddle food, beverages, and merchandise.
This brings us to the second Queens Underground, a for-profit company that makes fantastic clothing, bags, hats, towels, and other items that “represent” the borough. Why not shop at this QU entity to buy a costume for the other QU entity’s big event?
Editor’s note: Jamaica Performing Arts Center, which is located at 153-01 Jamaica Ave., will follow government safety protocols related to Covid.
