It’s in Queens
#InTheLoop | Ocean Breezes, Fantastic Eats in Rockaway
The beaches at Rockaway will open to the public on July 1. Hooray! The sun, sand, and surf are simply wonderful there.
But what about the food?
The Riis Park Beach Bazaar, which has served delicious, diverse cuisine over the past few years, is back, but everything is scaled down due to COVID concerns.
First of all, the hours have changed. RPBB, which is in the vicinity of 167-02 Rockaway Beach Blvd. and the Promenade, will officially operate from 11 am to 6 pm from Friday to Sunday with a few weather-related exceptions.
Second, the number of vendors is limited.
Finally, concerts and DJ events are on hold pending further notice.
Okay, but what about the food??!!
The Rockaway Clam Bar is currently hiring with plans to open at Bay 9 East. Local resident Susan Povich, who founded the Red Hook Lobster Pound, runs this stand, which serves seafood-centric fare such as ceviche, shrimp, and clam rolls.
Meanwhile, Cuisine By Claudette is ready to go at Bay 9 West. This is a satellite to eponymous restaurants on Beach 116th Street and Beach 69th Street. Claudette specializes in healthy French- and Moroccan-inspired delights, especially hummus, with some tremendous home-brewed coffee beverages.
The Riis Bazaar Beer Garden is coming to Bay 9 and the Bathhouse will have a beer garden shortly, too.
Then there’s The Dropout, which is currently operating at Bay 9 East every day from 11 am to 7 pm with weather-related changes. Run by locally grown chef Julie Steinberg, this independent restaurant is famous for blueberry bacon waffles, deep fried maple bacon French toast, fried chicken wings, churro cheeseburgers, homemade banana bread, and other unique items. Steinberg is following city shelter-in-place guidelines with takeout/pickup/delivery service and plans to offer seated dining as soon as possible.
Of course, social-distancing rules are in effect throughout Rockaway, even on the sand.
Editor’s note: This post will be updated as COVID-related guidelines change.
