#InTheLoop | Flushing Kiosk Spreads Holiday Spirit, Promotes Shopping
BY QEDC It's In Queens ON Nov 17, 2020
Something positive has popped up on a streetscape that includes way-too-many empty storefronts and “For Lease” signs.
Flushing BID‘s information kiosk is now a festive gingerbread house adorned with depictions of candy canes, snow, a Christmas wreath, Hanukkah candles, and happy window scenes. Unveiled on Nov. 16, it also features artwork promoting Flushing landmarks and businesses. By peering through the glass openings, visitors can scan QR codes that take them through local places to shop, dine, and experience.
As part of the fun, Flushing BID is running the Holiday at Flushing Instagram Selfie Contest. From now until Dec. 16 at noon, participants can take a photo of themselves at the kiosk and post them on Instagram with the tag @flushingbid and the hashtags #sendflushinglove #holidayatflushing. On Dec. 17, the humans behind the five most-liked posts will each receive a $50 Target gift card. (Winners will be announced on Instagram and Facebook and the kiosk.)
The kiosk promotion results from a partnership with Send Chinatown Love, a volunteer-run nonprofit that supports immigrant-owned small businesses in NYC Chinatowns. The goal is to create digital platforms for restaurants and stores so they will be able to sustain themselves now and into the future.
As always, the kiosk is in front of the Queens Public Library at 41-17 Main St. The special display will be on view through January 2021.
