#InTheLoop | Cutting Edge Astoria Gallery Opens Two Photo Exhibitions
BY QEDC It's In Queens
Here’s a developing story.
AlterWork Studios will hold an opening reception for two photo-based exhibitions on Friday, April 9, at 6 pm.
Lissy Gonzalez’s Take Only What You Need examines industrial agriculture’s effect on natural resources, especially food. The photo composites depict Gonzalez’s personal consumption and explore how supermarket culture amplifies waste.
Judyta Grudzien’s We Love You focuses on housekeepers, their work, their exposure to toxic cleaning supplies, and their concerns. (Grudzien cleans houses as a profession.)
Located at 30-09 35th Ave., AlterWork is a multi-disciplinary art center founded by Tina Stipanovic, who used to run the now shuttered RaR Bar.
These exhibits are presented via a partnership with AlterWork and Back to the Lab, a community-driven nonprofit for photographers seeking to hone skills and craft their vision. Last year these entities granted darkroom residences to Gonzalez, a multi-disciplinary artist who was born in the Dominican Republic, and Grudzien, who is from Poland. They had access to AlterWork’s darkroom for two weeks to produce prints for this exhibit.
