#InTheLoop | Western Queens Welcomes Boathouse + Environmental Center

The popular, time-honored, environment-friendly saying just changed a bit. Here’s the new version: Think globally, act locally, and head to Long Island City.

The Queens Landing Boathouse & Environmental Center opened at 57-28 2nd St. in LIC’s Gotham Point on Oct. 25.

Operated by the Hunter’s Point Parks Conservancy in partnership with the Gotham Organization, the state-of-the-art venue will facilitate recreational boating, offer classes on environmental sustainability, and host events.

In other words, get ready for some serious kayaking!

In fact, the first scheduled public paddle event is on Oct. 28 from 10 am to 2:30 pm. (Those with all skills levels are invited.)

The Newtown Creek Alliance is also involved, and nature walks, after-school programs, art, and nature journaling are also in the mix, along with plenty of chances to learn about bird migration, local wildlife, ecology, water quality, and green infrastructure.

Expect tanks for oysters, crabs, fish, and shrimp in the future as well as hydroponic and aquaponic activities.

“Through a rigorous selection process, Hunter’s Point Parks Conservancy emerged as the ideal organization to operate the new community center,” stated Bryan Kelly, President of Development at Gotham Organization, which manages Gotham Point’s two towers (1,132 residences) with a separate senior housing wing. “We are excited to continue activating the neighborhood with much-needed, sustainability-focused programs and activities.”

Editor’s note: In a demonstration of cross-borough cooperation, the North Brooklyn Community Boathouse will run kayak trips from the Queens Landing Boathouse & Environmental Center.
