#InTheLoop | The Shops at Skyview Hosts a Four-Week Promotion of Asian Culture

Do you want to learn about Asian culture? Head to The Shops at Skyview in Queens this summer.

The Flushing retail destination is about to host a four-week series of events designed to immerse teens and young adults in everything from K-pop music to Japanese fashion to Chinese dim sum.

Skyview will offer four summer school-style classes from July through August. Participants who take part in the first three events will have an opportunity to earn credits that will allow them to attend a by-invitation-only commencement ceremony with K-pop sensation Kang Daniel on Aug. 30.

Here’s more information.

Thursday, July 24
Cultural Electives, 5 pm to 7 pm, Level 4
A K-pop dance performance, a Taekwondo demonstration, a live K-pop DJ set, Asian snack tasting, a fun claw machine, a K-pop dance cover challenge, and a student ID uniform photobooth and style competition.

To take part in the K-pop dance cover challenge, guests are asked to take videos of themselves and their friends dancing to their favorite K-pop music and post them on Instagram, tagging @theshopsatskyviewny and #SkyviewHigh.

Five groups will be selected to compete during the Commencement on Aug. 30. The winning performer or group will receive a $500 Skyview gift certificate and join K-pop star Daniel, who rose to fame as the top contestant on the hit survival show Produce 101 and then built a successful solo career with chart-topping albums and international collaborations on stage. To participate in the student ID uniform challenge, contestants are asked to don their most unique uniform and take a student ID-style photo at the onsite photo booth during the Cultural Electives event. Photos will be shared online for public voting; eight finalists will be selected to join the Commencement on stage with Daniel on Aug. 30. This event is free, but pre-registration is recommended.

Sunday, Aug. 3
Creative Studio, 2 pm to 5 pm, Level 4
Fans and local artists work together to create a large-scale portrait of Daniel. Three of the top-performers will be selected to join the star on the Commencement stage on Aug. 30. Additionally, guests attending Creative Studio can have any t-shirt or tote bag purchased from Skyview tenants painted by local Asian artists on site.

There will also be a Japanese skincare and makeover demonstration, a Japanese-style DIY patch station, Korean beauty product sampling, and a summer custom perfume bottle station hosted by Dolce & Gabbana Beauty. This event is free, but space is limited and pre-registration is recommended.

Thursday, Aug. 15
Culinary Lab, 5 pm to 7 pm, Level 4
A Chinese dim-sum workshop, a Southeast Asian-style healthy meal demo, Asian snack and drink tasting, and a Kawaii lunchbox competition.

To take part in the lunchbox competition, guests are asked to place photos or videos of their lunchboxes and their contents on Instagram, tagging @theshopsatskyviewny and #SkyviewHigh. Three finalists will be selected to compete on-site during the event. The winner of the lunchbox competition will receive a $300 gift certificate and will be invited to the Commencement on Aug. 30 with Daniel. This event is free, but pre-registration is recommended.
