#InTheLoop | The Secret Theatre presents ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’

It’s just an average day…and it’s fascinating.

The Secret Theatre offers four performances of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown from Thursday, Nov. 21, to Saturday, Nov. 23.

Talented adult actors play all the parts in this musical, although the characters are children (and a pet dog) from Charles M. Schulz’s “Peanuts” comic strip. You know, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, etc.

Ticket prices are $30 for adults, $15 for children, and $20 for seniors. Showtimes are Nov. 21, Nov. 22, and Nov. 23 at 7 pm and Nov. 24 at 3 pm.

The original version of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown premiered off-Broadway in 1967. It was an instant hit, running for 1,547 performances. Since then, it has become one of the most produced musicals in history.

The Secret Theatre will offer a revised version – billed as “new musical entertainment” – that opened to tremendous success on Broadway in 1999. It consists of vignettes that touch on everything from Valentine’s Day to baseball season. Just regular days. Charlie can’t get his kite to work in one, while he makes the final out in a baseball game in another. In a third one, he can’t build up the nerve to talk to the little red-haired girl.

Charlie Brown is the main character in the “Peanuts” comic strip that Charles M. Schulz created in 1950. Lacking in self-confidence and often nervous, he’s the quintessential lovable loser with his catchphrase “Good Grief!” But the round-headed boy also has triumphs. Plus, he’s surrounded by a wacky, endearing cast of characters led by his pet dog Snoopy and his sister Sally. Others include the piano-obsessed Schroeder, the tiny yellow bird Woodstock, and freckled Peppermint Patty with her sidekick Marcie.

The comic strip went into syndication and then blew up into television programs, feature films, advertising campaigns, benefit concerts, merchandise, and theater. The last comic strip was published on Feb. 13, 2000, the day after Schulz died.

The Secret Theatre is at 38-02 61st St. in Woodside. It’s one block from the 7 train’s 61st/Woodside station.

This version of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown is directed by Jordan Schneider and produced by Richard Mazda who also serves as lighting and set designer. Benjy Balatbat is the musical director and the production stage manager is Alex Magallanes. The cast features Michael Verre in the role of Charlie, Paul Yoon as Linus, Sami Devries as Lucy, Savannah LaSalle as Sally, Jack Dalrymple as Schroeder, and Tabithat “Tabby” Bradley as Snoopy. JonathanTanner and Mariah Williams plays various roles.
