Lights, camera, action! Picnic, too!
Movies on the Waterfront returns to Hunter’s Point South Park in Long Island City this weekend.
Sponsored by the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, this eleventh annual series will show four films on a 30-foot inflatable screen provided by Rooftop Films with Midtown Manhattan in the background.
Attendance is free, and nearby concessionaire Frank Ottomanelli’s by the Water will sell food and beverages. (Great burgers!)
The fun begins with Twisters on Saturday, June 28. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, this 2024 thriller follows storm chasers who deal with a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. (Ottomanelli’s is the night’s sponsor.)
Just like the other three films, Twisters is scheduled to begin at dusk.
Next up is Clueless on Friday, Aug 1.
This 1995 comedy is a loose, Beverly Hills adaptation of British author Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma. Alicia Silverstone plays a beautiful and wealthy high school student who comes to realize that doing good deeds is more fulfilling than her plastic life. To add to the fun, the night’s sponsor, TF Cornerstone, and HPPC will host a 1990s theme party in the area.
Lilo & Stitch runs on Friday, Sept. 12.
This 2002 Walt Disney animation depicts Hawaiian orphan Lilo Pelekai and a pet-like alien she calls “Stitch.” Programmed to cause chaos, Stitch bonds with Lilo and has to choose between his original destructive purpose and his newfound family. Shibley Day Camp sponsors this night.
The series ends with Beetlejuice on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Blessed with an all-star cast led by Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Winona Ryder, this 1988 movie mixes fantasy with comedy and horror. A recently deceased couple’s ghosts hire a wacky guy to scare away the new residents of their house.
Costumes are encouraged for Beetlejuice, as the screening coincides with a Halloween celebration.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone to the best movie experience anywhere,” stated HPPC President Rob Basch. “There is nothing that says ‘summer’ better than spending an evening in the park with your friends and family.”
Editor’s note: The outdoor viewing area is by the East River. The closest streets are Center Boulevard and Borden Avenue.
