FERTILE GROUND has supported emerging and established artists for 15 seasons, featuring the work of six different choreographers in Jan-June 2021, presenting a total of 42 artists across seven showings. The non-curated program features six dance makers per performance and profits diverse levels of experience, backgrounds, age of artists, and dance aesthetics.

Queens Theatre’s Summer Musical Theatre program returns IN PERSON! Rising young stars will create and perform an original pocket-sized musical play in just two weeks! Our program takes students through the entire process of creating a musical play from auditions to writing and rehearsing, culminating in a performance on our Mainstage. Working with our professional and dynamic teaching artists, students will engage their imaginations, study the process of theatre and work together as an ensemble to put on a production of their own design during this exciting and comprehensive summer experience.
QT Show Stoppers Summer Musical Theatre Program is open to all kids – no experience in the performing arts is needed to join in the fun. Acceptance into the program is on a first-come-first-served basis. Auditions for roles will take place once the play is written. Space is limited so register today!

Queens Theatre adheres to mitigation procedures suggested by the CDC and NYC Authorities. We use electrostatic sprayers to sanitize the building. The rooms used for the program will be sanitized after each session. We have upgraded our HVAC and we use MERV 13 air filters suggested by the CDC. We have also installed hand sanitizing stations throughout the building. We will take every precaution to keep students safe including mask-wearing, social distancing, and sanitation breaks.
All Queens Theatre teachers and staff working on Show Stoppers are fully vaccinated and will follow all safety protocols set by Queens Theatre’s Safety and Health Coordinator.

A typical day might look like this:
10 am-10:30 am: Check-in and theatre games.
10:45 am-12 pm: Develop our musical play. We collectively brainstorm our plot, conflict, characters, lyrics, and dialogue.
12pm-12:30pm: Lunch Time!
12:30pm-1:30pm: Dance Break! We learn and practice an original dance for our show.
1:30 pm-2 pm: We continue to brainstorm our play and rehearse what we have created.
2 pm-2:45 pm: Break into Song! We develop and practice our original songs for our show.
2:45 pm-3 pm: Sum up the day and set goals for the next day.

TAKE ROOT, now in its 13th season, nurtures dance artists at established stages in their careers, pairing them in a split bill or full evening-length program. This monthly series supports dance makers’ experimentation and growth with support to present their work to the public. Take Root will present 20 aesthetically diverse artists among seven performances from July 2021 – June 2022.
About the Work
Alison Cook Beatty Dance’s MAHAWAY: SPRING ETERNAL is a two-act ballet that tells the story of a Mother Skunk named Akhushtal, her baby girl Mahaway, and a protective jaguar named Ix Chel. MAHAWAY: SPRING ETERNAL is a commemorative dance & musical celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Paris premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s and Vaslav Nijinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”. Cook-Beatty’s ballet premiered at The Schermerhorn Theater in Brooklyn, NY, on the century anniversary date May 29, 2013, in collaboration with composer Dorian Wallace, the co-artistic director of Tenth Intervention. In this virtual performance, 2019, Tenth Intervention performs live with 25 dancers from Alison Cook Beatty Dance and Infinity Dance Theater, a non-traditional dance company committed to expanding the boundaries of dance by featuring dancers with and without disabilities, under the direction of Artistic Director Kitty Lunn.
Anabella Lenzu’s The night that you stopped acting/ La noche que dejaste de actuar, confronts the absurdity and irony of life, while being an artist and a spectator in today’s world. The work reflects Anabella Lenzu’s experience as a Latina/European artist living in New York and comes from a deep examination of her motivations as a woman, mother, and immigrant.

The Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL) musicians will play wind quintet favorites by Stravinsky and Ibert, as well as selections from Valerie Coleman’s piece Portraits of Josephine.
The OSL brass quintet weaves this program together, playing pieces by Paul Dukas, Leonard Bernstein, Malcolm Arnold, and Scott Joplin. This FREE concert (tickets required) takes place on the Outdoor Stage of the Queen’s Theatre, just yards away from our facilities in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
