This program is for students who are:

Able to attend all the classes. The schedule is Monday – Friday (Weeks 1-6: Monday –Thursday, 12:30pm – 5:00pm, Friday: 9:30am – 2:00pm; Weeks 7-12: Monday-Thursday, 8:00am -12:30pm, Friday 9:30am – 2:00pm)
Looking for employment in the food industry
Eligible to work in the United States
Able to read and write in English
Able to stand for 4 hours at a time for a hands-on cooking

Young readers will gather in a relaxed atmosphere to take turns reading a “book of the month” together. A copy of the book will be given to each child and an APEC educator will engage and encourage the children as they read. The program includes a related activity and animal meet and greet. Your child will leave with a brand-new book each month, to enhance their at home library. Children must wear a mask for the entire program. A certificate of completion will be issued at the end of the series. Limited to 6 participants.
A portion of the funds raised for this series will go towards the care of our animal ambassadors thanks to the generosity of local friends of APEC.

One of the pastries Guyanese / Guyanese-American people love to snack on is pine tart. It is a shortcrust pastry filled with fresh pineapple filling.
Guyana is a Caribbean country that is located at the top tip of South America. It was once a part of three Guianas: French Guiana, Dutch Guyana, and British Guiana. Guyana was called British Guiana when it was colonized and occupied by the English — Dutch Guiana is now called Suriname and French Guiana has kept its name. The food of Guyana is a beautiful mix of the 6 races that are a part of the country: Amerindian (Native American aka American Indian), East Indian, African, Portuguese, European and Chinese.

Prepare Care Packages for Needy Households (8:45 am-10:45 am)
Commonpoint Queens will provide lunch and care packages to homebound seniors and needy households. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Sam Field Center at 8:45 am to prepare the care packages.
Deliver meals to homebound seniors and needy households (11:00 am-12:00 pm)
Commonpoint Queens will provide lunch and care packages to homebound seniors and needy households. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Tanenbaum Family Pool Food Pantry (58-25 Little Neck Parkway, across the street from the Sam Field Center) between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. Each group will be asked to take four to six deliveries. Each route should take no longer than one and a half hours to complete. To the greatest extent possible, Commonpoint Queens will assign delivery routes as close to a volunteer’s hometown as possible.
Donate Blood and Join the Bone Marrow Registry (10:00 am-4:00 pm)

Make Paper Flowers for Needy Households (Deadline: 8:00 am)
Commonpoint Queens seeks volunteers to create paper flower bouquets that will be included in the care packages sent to needy households. Volunteers will have the option of using their own materials or picking up materials from the Sam Field Center. Each volunteer will be asked to make 20 bouquets and return them to the Sam Field Center.
Inspire others with a personal art project (Deadline: 5:00 pm)
Volunteers are asked to draw and explain their personal “dream” for themselves, their community, or the world. Drawings will be placed on display at the Sam Field Center in Little Neck. Volunteers may use their own materials or choose to pick up materials (paper, markers, and crayons are recommended) from the Sam Field Center between January 4 and January 15. Volunteers are asked to drop their works of art off at the Sam Field Center or Central Queens before 5:00 pm on January 18. Register here.
Write Letters to Front-Line Workers (Deadline: 5:00 pm)
Volunteers are asked to write letters of gratitude to front-line workers who have served throughout the COVID-19. Letters will be delivered to hospitals, fire departments, police departments, and other essential services. Volunteers are asked to drop off letters at the Sam Field Center or Central Queens before 5:00 pm on January 18.

Each and every single one of us can be a leader by living by our values and empowering others to do the same. Drawing on examples of great leaders of the past, this class will explore what it means to be a leader, and will offer ways for each individual to realize that potential within themselves. Commonpoint Queens is thrilled to host a panel of leaders who have made a measurable and lasting grassroots impact in their communities–which highlights the theme of service so central to MLK Day. Panelists include Kevin Livingston, the Founder and Executive Director of 100 Suits for 100 Men, and Jason Sole, the former President of the Minneapolis NAACP and author of From Prison to Ph.D.: A Memoir of Hope, Resilience, and Second Chances. After the panel, the audience will have the opportunity to engage in a questions and answers session with the panelists.

At QCBC’s next meeting, Deborah Cramer will speak about her latest book, “The Narrow Edge: A Tiny Bird, An Ancient Crab, and an Epic Journey”, in which she accompanied a small sandpiper on its 19,000-mile annual migration and witnessed how its life, and ours, depend on an ancient animal, the horseshoe crab.
Each year tiny sandpipers—red knots—undertake a near-miraculous 19,000-mile journey from one end of the earth to the other and back. In this firsthand account, Deborah Cramer accompanies them on their extraordinary odyssey along the length of two continents, tracking birds from remote Tierra del Fuego to the icy Arctic. On the full moon of spring’s highest tides, she seeks out horseshoe crabs, ancient, primordial animals whose eggs are essential to migrating shorebirds, and whose blue blood, unbeknownst to most people, safeguards human health.
The Narrow Edge offers a unique insight into how the lives of humans, red knots, and horseshoe crabs are intertwined, and is an inspiring portrait of loss and resilience, of the tenacity of birds, and the courage of the many people who bird by bird and beach by beach, keep red knots flying.

home. is Nia & Ness’s second evening-length dance-poetry piece that deeply explores our daily realities as an out Black, lesbian couple. With this work, we posit that our bodies are our homes, collecting stories like dust and decor as we move through the world. This work also recognizes that as out Black lesbians, our bodies themselves put our literal, shared home on display every time we walk out of its doors. From sharing our everyday experiences with “micro” aggressions to making visible the impacts of violence, we go there with this work. We hope you’ll join us.
Misaki Hayama presents Warabe Uta for the January 2021 performances of Take Root. “Warabe Uta” are traditional Japanese songs, similar to nursery rhymes often sung as part of children’s games. The dance pieces created and presented here explore this hidden history and show how the past has influenced new generations to find their future paths.
