Open to professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz, music educators and serious hobbyists, Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jams invites musicians to perform at Flushing Town Hall. All are welcome, regardless of instrument (vocalists, too!). Our Steinway baby grand and drum kit are available at each Jam. House Band and Jam Sessions are led by Carol Sudhalter, with Joe Vincent Tranchina, Scott Neumann, and Eric Lemon. Don’t play, but love jazz? Come listen!

Cuban piano phenomenon from Havana Dayramir González brings a special program titled “Havana Today, Afro Cuban Jazz” a tribute to Chucho Valdes, Chico O’Farrill and Chick Corea featuring his Habana enTRANCé quartet with Dayramir González on piano, Juan Chiavassa on drums, Dean Torrey on bass, and Christian Moraga on percussion. Representing the young generation of Afro-Cuban jazz, Dayramir González performed in 15,000-seater stadiums with legends like Chucho and Bebo Valdes and headlined Carnegie Hall.

Rooted in zapateado jarocho, the traditional dance from Veracruz, Mexico, Julia del Palacio premieres “Golpe de Mar” (Struck by the Sea). A reflection on son jarocho dancers’ intentional movement, agency, and individual style, “Golpe de Mar” unpacks this 300-year-old style and proposes new ways of approaching it, enhancing the role of the dancer within the musical ensemble and celebrating dancers’ contributions to the preservation and growth of the genre.

This concert is made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

It’s the 20th anniversary year for one of Bayside Historical Society’s most beloved events! Our annual TOTTEN TROT 5K is a waterfront course in historic Fort Totten Park on Little Neck Bay in Bayside, a pristine stretch surrounding a preserved Civil War fortress. Runners will pass through the Historic District, which consists of buildings dating to the late 1800s. The Fort is situated where the Long Island Sound meets the East River at the Throgs Neck Bridge. The start and finish are located at the landmarked Officers’ Club, home of Bayside Historical Society. The course includes a loop out onto Little Bay Path to the Throgs Neck Bridge and back to the Fort. Timing and scoring are provided by elitefeats on a USATF Certified Course.

KIDS’ FUN RUN 10:00 am A short-distance sprint for tiny tots and kids up to 12, grouped by age category. Special “Cookie Medals” for participants in the Fun Run! Sign up on race day; $5.00 suggested donation.

Halloween costumes are highly encouraged for both adults and kids!

Amenities & Awards for the 5K race include:
• Cash prizes for top three overall male and female winners
• 1st place trophies & 2nd place and 3rd place medals
• $50 Value Gift Certificate for Best Costume Award
• T-shirts to first 150 participants
• Raffle prizes open to all registered runners

This year’s Totten Trot will feature a special guest appearance by the 501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison, a worldwide Star Wars costuming organization!

After the race, there will be a presentation of awards in the historic ballroom of the landmarked Officers’ Club (“The Castle”).
