Last one in is a rotten egg!
After being closed since summer 2022 for renovations, the Astoria Pool is now open!
Mayor Eric Adams and other elected and appointed officials celebrated the completed project on June 27 — the same day all 53 NYC public pools opened. (They’ll operate until Sunday, Sept. 8.)
With an $18.948 million price tag, the undertaking brought the Astoria Park facility up to contemporary standards and codes, upgrading pool operations, and ensuring the aged facility environment is safe for users.
Just like the other NYC Parks Department’s outdoor facilities, Astoria Pool’s operating hours are 11 am to 3 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm daily. (Times might be adjusted due to lifeguard availability.)
It’s one of several pools that will offer the free Learn to Swim program this summer.
First opened in 1936 and basically Olympic-and-a-half size, Astoria Pool is NYC’s largest and oldest public pool. The facility features decorative glass block, deco-style steel railings, and an Art Moderne style ticket booth. It was designated an official NYC landmark in 2006.
“Our free outdoor pools are incredible amenities for New Yorkers seeking to cool off, have fun, practice swim skills, and get some exercise,” stated NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “We’re thrilled to reopen the iconic Astoria Pool…We look forward to seeing New Yorkers make a splash this summer at our pools citywide!”
