#NewsFlash | Sunnyside celebrates season with bargain booklets, vintage trolleys and The Nutcracker
BY QEDC It's In Queens
‘Tis the season to celebrate in Sunnyside with bargains, trolley rides, music, and free candy canes.
First, there’s the Sunnyside Shines Shop Local Holiday Passport. This booklet is filled with discounts for shopping at more than 40 local businesses, including restaurants, beauty and nail salons, shoe stores, flower shops, jewelers, liquor stores, pharmacies, and medical offices.
Most coupons are valid through Dec. 31. All will be entered into a contest with more than $500 in prizes.
Second, the Holiday Passport is easy to use, but it will be a breeze on two upcoming Saturdays — Nov. 25 and Dec. 2 — when a free trolley will roll through Sunnyside every 20 minutes, taking shoppers to designated spots on Greenpoint Avenue from 41st Street to 46th Street and on Queens Boulevard from 50th Street to 39th Street from noon to 8 pm. The 34-seat, handicap-accessible, red-and-green vehicle will also cruise a portion of 43rd Avenue, near where The Lowery Bar & Kitchen is located.
During both days, select businesses will host free gift-wrapping stations with arts-and-crafts activities and give out free samples. On Dec. 2 only, the Sunnyside Ballet Studio will offer a condensed performance of The Nutcracker in Bliss Plaza, located at the intersection of 46th Street and Queens Boulevard, under the elevated 7 train.
Third, the Holiday Passports will be distributed at the Sunnyside Shines Holiday Lighting at the Sunnyside Arch on Queens Boulevard and 46th Street on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 6 pm.
As part of the fun, the Fabulous Fezziwig Carolers — a quartet that favors Victorian Era, Dickens-style costumes — will harmonize traditional Christian songs, Hanukkah ditties, and modern day reindeer-inspired ballads. Attendees can expect to hear unique versions of “Auld Lang Syne” and “God Bless America.”
The Sunnyside Youth Drum Corps and the McManus Irish Dancers will perform, too, and Santa Claus is expected to show up with some free hot chocolate, candy canes, and maybe a gift or two.
