It’s in Queens
#PickoftheWeek | Queensboro Dance Festival is July 19+20
It’s by Queens and for Queens.
The Queensboro Dance Festival is set for July 19-20 (at 7 pm both nights) outdoors at the Hunters Point Park waterfront in Long Island City. (Rain dates: July 26-27.)
Twenty-seven cultural and contemporary groups will offer a wide variety of genres, including Indian Kathak, tap, Chinese Lion Dancing, aerial silks, Japanese, modern, Colombian folk, house, belly dance, and Bhangra. Every troupe is from Queens, representing 12 neighborhoods spanning from Astoria to Howard Beach, and more than 70 percent of the pieces will be borough premieres.
Here’s the lineup: RASTRO; Xiang Xu Dance Theater; New York Hung Sing Kwoon Lion Dance & Kung Fu; Project 44; CLaF Dance Project; Prashant Shah and Dancers; SUNPROJECT; Barbara Mahler’s Dances; Masala Bhangra; Cole Collective; Brandon Welch; Karla Florez; Noora Dance Theater; Jackie Nowicki; Vissi Dance Theater; The Rogue Dancers; Micca; #Taplife Company; Marcela Duarte; Sheep Meadow Dance Theatre/Billy Blanken; IchiFuji-kai Dance Association (Resobox); NSquared Dance; Q&A Productions; The Physical Plant; Gotham Dance Theater; LVCID; and Dugal Dance Projects.
Attendance is free, but a pre-show VIP happy hour will happen at the Crabhouse Restaurant (2-03 Borden Ave., LIC) with a Queens-themed raffle and gift bags at 5 pm. Tickets are $20 online/$25 at the door.
“Each year, more cultural groups are participating in the festival, which has been really exciting,” said QDF Founder/Director Karesia Batan. “It’s a different opportunity where Queens-based cultural groups and contemporary dance companies share a platform, and expand each other’s audiences.”
This is actually the first of two festivals. The second one is scheduled for Oct. 5-8 with details that are to be announced.
