Take Root Presents: DeLucia Benson Dance and Six Degrees Dance @ Green Space
Mar 15 @ 8:00 pm – Mar 16 @ 9:30 pm
Take Root Presents: DeLucia Benson Dance and Six Degrees Dance @ Green Space | New York | United States

TAKE ROOT, now in its 10th season, nurtures dance artists at established stages in their careers, pairing them in a split bill or full evening-length program. This monthly series supports dance makers’ experimentation and growth by providing our venue, Green Space, along with full technical and marketing support to present their work to the NYC public.

Curated by Chris Ferris

About the Work

DeLucia Benson Dance will show a duet of works. The first set will include Crux Acclaim and Quintessence. Crux Acclaim is a work of physical dance that creates shapes and patterns that excites the mind and spirit. Quintessence is a work with dynamic shifts in mood, timing, and movement quality. Strength is apparent as the women collide and embrace. Music will be provided by cellist Loren Dempster.

Six Degrees Dance’s as yet untitled piece explores ideas of fear, aggression, anxiety, apathy and the false panacea of distraction as it relates to today’s social climate. Performers, shrouded by thin veils of complacency, separate themselves from the world around them in an attempt at safety and protection. But when they remove those veils, what do they see? And how will they respond?

“Epic Poems: Our Heroes, Ourselves”

We are all heroes in our own stories, and this connects us to the long history of humans trying to make sense of the world through narrative. We will read a few examples of poems that tell a story, and study images of myths and folktales, unearthing the stuff of legend in our own lives. It will, of course, be epic.

Pichchenda Bao is an emerging writer and poet in Queens, NY. She was born in Cambodia at the end of the Khmer Rouge regime and came with her parents to the United States as refugees in the 1980s.

This program is made possible, in part, with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, as well as with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
