Calpulli Mexican Dance Company presents an original, limited-run holiday production, “NAVIDAD: A Mexican-American Christmas” at Thalia Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside, Queens, from November 30 to December 16, 2018, The new production celebrates the holiday traditions experienced by a young person of Mexican immigrant parents growing up in New York City. From Aztec-inspired dance to Christmas carols, the youngster tries to bring their two worlds together. In a dream, they imagine the fusion of Mariachi music with Tchaikovsky, folk dance with ballet, and the wonderment of their two cultures. The program, with 16 dancers and core of musicians led by Calpulli’s Music Director George Saenz, tells a story with commissioned works by Mexican and Mexican-American guest choreographers with new musical arrangements and original works. The Oratorio Society of Queens performs selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” as well as traditional Christmas favorites and Chanukah songs on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 4:00 pm in the Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC), Bayside, New York. As a hallmark of the vibrant arts community in Queens, the Oratorio Society of Queens will perform with its 125-plus member chorus under the direction of Maestro David Close with featured soloists Jennifer Gliere, soprano, Byron Singleton, tenor, Nathan Bahny, bass-baritone and with OSQ’s orchestra, the Orchestral Arts Ensemble of Queens.
