41-26 27th Street, Long Island City, NY 11101
LIC Arts Open is proud to present LIC Gallery Nights, free monthly events where Long Island City’s galleries and art spaces open their doors to the public in an after-hours celebration of art and culture. The third Thursday of each month.
Participants for the first Gallery Night include:
BrickHouse Ceramic Art Center, 10-34 44th Drive. A fully equipped ceramic studio which offers pottery classes to all levels.
Brooklyn Boulders, 23-10 41st Avenue. The rock climbing facility will shine a spotlight on the community by showing the works of Hedda Films, followed by dinner behind their walls with Micasa Foods.
Dougherty Gallery at Crescent Grill, 38-40 Crescent Street. A dedicated space in this restaurant that helps show artists and sell local art.
Eleventh Street Arts, 46-06 11th Street. An exhibition space for contemporary drawings, paintings and sculptures.
Local Project, 11-27 44th Road. On view will be “A Growing Storage Problem,” a solo show by NYC based sculptor J McDonald. Through absurdity and abstraction, McDonald explores the current state of our anthropocentric dystopia.
Materials For The Arts, 33-00 Northern Boulevard, 3rd Fl. New York’s premiere reuse center and space where to donate unneeded art supplies. Musician and creative reuse pioneer Skip La Plante will have his Symphony of Chimes on display at MFTA Gallery. See windchimes made out objects such as bicycle pedals, bed springs, crushed, lobster pots and coat racks. Plus, don’t miss his one of a kind performance.
Radiator Gallery, 10-61 Jackson Avenue. An opportunity for local and international emerging and mid-career curators and artist-curators to work with and learn about the operations of a multi-disciplinary organization. Its current group exhibition, Works: Reflections on Failure, features pieces by 11 contemporary artists. Working in a wide variety of mediums, each artist investigates the notion of failure in contemporary art.
RESOBOX, 41-26 27th Street. A cultural center in Queens that is dedicated to sharing and celebrating Japanese influence in the arts. Come see its fifth annual exhibition of hand-painted ninetieth century Japanese photographs from the Burns Collection & Archive. The exhibit includes images of the two major religions of Japan, Buddhism and Shintoism.
SculptureCenter, 44-19 Purves Street. New York City’s only contemporary art museum dedicated to sculpture. Exhibitions on view this fall: “Cosima von Bonin: Who’s Exploiting Who in the Deep Sea?,” the influential German artist’s solo exhibition which examines her fascination with the sea; and “Aki Sasamoto: Delicate Cycle,” the Japanese-American artist’s solo exhibition which features a new body of work created in relation to SculptureCenter’s lower level galleries.
The Local NYC, 13-02 44th Avenue. This hostel has been a huge supporter of the cultural scene in LIC, providing permanent showing space on their walls for local artists. The Local is open 24/7 and people can walk in and look at art for free at any time of the day.
The Experimental Gallery, 43-01 22nd Street. This month Reis Studios is launching The Experimental Gallery, a new space dedicated to contemporary art, and curated by artist Julian Calderon. It is an ideal space for artists and independent curators to present specific projects and exhibitions before reaching out to a major art audience.
